Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL), a leading provider of telecommunications and ICT services in the country, has announced financial results for the quarter that ended 31 March 2023. The announcement was made at the board meeting held in Islamabad on 17 April 2023.

In the first quarter of 2023, PTCL Group continued its momentum and strengthened its position as Pakistan’s leading integrated telecommunications service provider. Despite the continued challenging macroeconomic conditions, the Group achieved revenue growth of 23.2% year-on-year.

This strong revenue growth was primarily driven by strong performances in fixed broadband, mobile data, business solutions, and banking services. The negative impact of the macroeconomic challenges looming in 2022 will continue to affect businesses in 2023. With energy and fuel prices continuing to rise, operators face significant challenges in providing consumers with affordable and quality service.

Pakistan’s balance of payments problems and restrictions imposed by the National Bank of Pakistan on the opening of LCs have impacted the operators’ network rollout schedules and have also led to a significant decline in PKR against foreign currencies.

This deteriorating rupee-to-dollar parity, rising interest rates, and additional taxes on telecom operators above and beyond the normal corporate income tax have had a severe impact on profitability.

Mitigating the impact of these thorny issues requires government policy intervention to bring much-needed relief to the sector.
