YouTube will stop showing overlay ads on desktop starting next month

YouTube continues to display what are known as “overlay ads” through desktop browsers. As their name suggests, they appear above (and below) the video. They’re annoying and the YouTube team agrees, so they’ll be removed soon.

After April 6th, you will no longer see ads of this type. It will also no longer be available as an option in YouTube Studio. However, YouTube expects the impact for most creators to be limited as these ads will be replaced by “other ad formats.” Overlay ads were also displayed on mobile, but they were removed a while ago and no one is against removing them. However, it’s not clear what will replace these ads on the desktop – perhaps it will be about pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll ads.

See  YouTube Help for more information. You can also  this page to see all three types of his ads that are still available after April 6th.
